friday random ten: “independent expenses” edition

16 Oct

Another week comes to an end; a week of a bunch of big, one-time stressors that I’m glad to have gotten past mosty unscathed. As far as I can tell, other than the usual weekend mundanities, I’ve got a whole lot of nothin’ on the plate. I think I’m going to enjoy that. Maybe I’ll get to swing some imaginary hammers at goblins rather than swinging actual hammers at nails.

Otherwise, this week (and a little bit of the last) has been a rather big one, at least if you’re a fan of obscure independent and “internet famous” authors and musicians.

→ Last week, I got my grubby paws on The Badlees’ Love is Rain, which I’m still digesting in fits and starts while driving (in between stand-up comedy binges and NPR news), but I can say that I’m really enjoying it; especially the new Alexander/Naydock tunes.

→ Sticking with music, this week saw the release of I Made You a CD, But I Eated It, the first physical release from YouTube’s own adorable Ukelele troubador Molly Lewis, featuring clever Coulton- and Lehrer-influenced songs about social networking, Mr. T, breaking up with Wikipedia, and a three movement exploration of the Lincoln Assasination.

→ Also, this week brought with it the release of Wil Wheaton‘s Memories of the Future: Volume 1, a snarky behind-the-curtain memoir of recollections and commentary on the first half of season 1 of TNG by someone who was part of it; I’m looking forward to reading this one.

And I still haven’t gotten around to ordering the xkcd book!

Anyway, some tunes for the morning (even if I wish I’d loaded up the Sarah Jarosz disc already):

  1. “Now” – Edie Brickell & New Bohemians
  2. “Watch the Sky” – Dimensional Holophonic Sound
  3. “Ghost” – Indigo Girls
  4. “Stratford-on-Guy” – Liz Phair
  5. “Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill” – Hüsker Dü
  6. “I Wish I Was In New Orleans” – Scarlett Johannsen
  7. “Piggies” – The Beatles
  8. “War on War” – Wilco
  9. “Living In Sin” – Bon Jovi
  10. “What Have You” – William Shatner
