absences
So I sent my first born off to college on Friday.
We mostly got through it without crazy emotional outbursts; it was kind of an all-day affair, dragging lots of stuff up three flights of stairs, meeting roommates, going to the store to get all the stuff we *didn’t* bring, and sitting for all the weird little private school traditions I never got to deal with going to a state school (never mind that my college was something like 75 years older than the school I’m sending my kid to), and driving the really boring back-road trip out and back to the middle-of-nowhere Virginia.
She seems to be mostly settled in at this point (as we expected, as soon as we got out of the way and let the kids sort themselves out); classes don’t start for another couple of days, though there’s lots of orientation things to do.
She also found a feral cat to be friends with (apparently he’s been hanging out with students for a while), and she’s found some humans to hang out with too.
It hasn’t quite hit me yet that she’s off doing her thing and not here, but I’m sure it will sooner or later.
