especially a party that I’m throwing!
I have a small fondness for Rocky Horror, but yeah, I’ve mostly outgrown it; Spaced pretty much nailed the limited shelf life of it’s appeal. Still, the original version is a camp classic that any “hip”, “with-it” student of pop culture ought to be at least passingly familiar with.
I say “original version”, because apparently MTV is prepping a remake.
Dammit, Janet MTV, that’s a really bad idea.
The original was a definite product of it’s time; remaking it with some modern pop tarts and a hip-hop/emo version of “Science Fiction Double Feature” isn’t going to have the same impact or staying power. Just leave it be, and let this generation of kids discover the original in college like the rest of us did.
Maybe MTV is starting to notice the growing underground trend; quirky, off-beat musicals are becoming a commodity. Dr. Horrible broke the internet in half last week, and the upcoming Repo! – The Genetic Opera is getting some positive attention, and they want to get in on the action early.
More than likely, though, they saw that Mama Mia! made a ton of money as Batman counter-programming, and wanted their own, supposedly “edgy”, version of the cheesy pop songbook movie musical to play with.
Either way, they’re doing it wrong.
Meh.
Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog. 🙂 Cheers! Sandra. R.
