“I’ll let you know when ‘e rematerializes”
I caught the new Star Trek at a matinee after work this week. For the record, I enjoyed it greatly; sets up a whole new paradigm, with plenty of nods (most rather clever) to the series’ 40 year history. I say this as a fully-steeped Trekkie, of course; I’m familiar with the language of the series, and am probably a little more willing than the average movie-goer to overlook the questionable science, a little two much reliance on the “Wrath of Khan” formula, and a couple of plot holes big enough to fly a UFP capital ship through (It feels like there’s 20 minutes missing somewhere that were cut for time; I expect that’s where the explanations for a couple of things went).
I’d still recommend this one to the non-Trekkie; it’s a solid, fast-paced action movie, with lots of excitement and plenty of humor. It’s a good “jump-in” point; while it makes use of existing Star Trek continuity, it doesn’t require a any real previous knowledge. The cast is quite charismatic; embodying the original characters without devolving into imitation or parody. Everyone gets their moments to shine, and it’s easy root for all of them. I personally enjoyed the (sadly limited in screen time) work from Karl Urban and Simon Pegg as McCoy and Scott.
So, yeah, it’s worth seeing.
As an aside, the lead-in trailers included back-to-back GI:JOE- the rise of cobra and Transformers: revenge of the fallen trailers, which momentarily recalled fond memories of after school cartoon viewing as a pre-teen. Knowing is, indeed, half the battle, with or without the pork chop sandwiches.
Mary is jealous. She wants to see the star trek movie too.
