the hobbling return of the Friday Random Ten
As much as I’m not a fan of “kid” and “grown-up” being non-overlapping circles in the Venn diagram of life, I’ve noticed over the last year or two that there’s one area where it feels like I’ve crossed the line; boarded the elfship and sailed Into The West, never to return to Middle-Earth. Or to Narnia… whichever early 20th Century Oxford English Professor/fantasy novelist frame you prefer, really; The allusion remains the same.
As young and vibrant as my mind continually feels, my body is starting to show the initial signs of wear. Not seriously, mind you (I am, after all, only 35 and in rather good health), but I just don’t bounce back quickly anymore from something like a bout with a cold/flu/sinus thing. I feel afteraffects for a good week after the worst of it’s passed. I’m not nineteen any longer, and this realization is somewhat humbling.
It’s especially humbling (and other things) given that I’m still feeling echoes of the weekend’s allergy/sinus episode; rather like a lingering hangover, without the enjoyment factor in having earned it. It honestly sucks.
Anyway, in order to put this depressing thought behind me, I’m going to kick out a random ten, because I haven’t done one in months, and I’ve reloaded my mp3 player with a bunch of different stuff in the last couple of weeks:
- “Deed I Do” – Chet Atkins and Les Paul
- “Don’t Go Back to Rockville” – R.E.M.
- “New Day Rising” – Hüsker Dü
- “Safe From Harm” – Massive Attack
- “Elvenpath” – Nightwish
- “Nashville” – Indigo Girls
- “Giant Robot Birdhead” – Aquabats
- “Wintertime” – Steve Miller Band
- “Like Whoa” – Aly and AJ
- “Brian Wilson (live)” – Barenaked Ladies
