YES WE DID!!!!
Happy, Happy! Joy, Joy!
So, with the 11pm poll closings on the west coast, Obama took it over the magic number, 270, and thus, will become the 44th President of the United States. Yep, a historical milestone, and a genuinely good guy taking the reins for the next four years. I’m glad I was around to see it, and feel good about where the country is headed.
I don’t envy him the job, frankly – cleaning up the mess of the last eight years is going to be a painful and thankless job. I believe, however, that he, and the team he eventually puts together, will be up to the task, and will do the best job they can in the interest of the country.
In working to do so, he’s certainly going to make some moves, that, in isolation, are going to disappoint me. However, I recognize, and more importantly, HE recognizes, that he’s there to represent the interests of the whole country, not just his hardcore base of voters. After all, if everybody’s just a little bit pissed off about something, it’s probably a good compromise. The guy doesn’t (as Scalzi put it) fart cinnamon-scented rainbows, but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t a breath of fresh air.
Things have, so far, fallen out about the way everyone expected; Right before the west coast put Obama over the top, everyone started calling VA for Obama. A blue Virginia is what I wanted to see more than anything; it’s going to end up close, but it’s still a win; the first time VA went for the Democrat in 40 years. It makes me feel like I almost maybe fit here.
Anyway – I feel good. Really good. Now, I’m going to go to bed.
