how to handle repetitive tasks

05 Aug

I spent a great deal of my work day today processing manual purchase orders in the system so that others might abuse them during the tesing process. This was a dull, repetitive task, but one which needed to be one, and for some reason, I’m better at doing these than anyone else in the room.

peripheral lesson: efficiency is often rewarded with more busywork.

Anyway, I’ve discovered a way to amuse myself during this particular task; by filling the free text “remarks” field on the purchase order document with amusing, random things, including, among others, the “33” blurb from the Rolling Rock bottle, various song lyrics (REM, the Ramones, Coulton, and the Spice Girls), the “crawl” from Star Wars: Episode IV, the Preamble to the US Constitution, and the opening narration of the television program “Manimal”.

Anything to pass the time, I suppose.
